Dead Animal Removal in Macon

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against Georgia DNR published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

Unpleasant, urgent, and almost always the consequence of an earlier problem that was sealed up instead of solved.

Macon specifically

In a balloon-framed house an animal that dies in a wall can be a long way from where you can smell it, because the stud bays run uninterrupted for a full storey. Locating it usually means working from the smell and the fly activity to a single cavity before anything gets opened up; guessing wrong means cutting plaster twice.

Dead animals in Bibb County: who does what

Bibb County Animal Enforcement states plainly that it does not handle nuisance wildlife, and refers residents to the Department of Natural Resources instead. The one exception it lists is an emergent situation where the animal is sick, injured or underage. An animal that is simply living in your attic is none of those things, so getting it out is a private expense.

For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the UGA Extension, Bibb County office is at 715 Oglethorpe Street, Macon, GA 31201, 478-310-5350 (office page).

Signs, and why they matter

  • A sweet, heavy, unmistakable smell that worsens with heat
  • Clusters of flies or maggots at a single spot on a wall or ceiling
  • A stain spreading on drywall or a ceiling
  • Bacteria and secondary insect infestation
  • Staining and odour that soaks into drywall, timber and insulation and will not simply air out

How removal works

Locate the carcass (often the hardest part, and sometimes requiring a small inspection cut) remove it, then treat and deodorise the area properly. Masking the smell without removing the source does not work.

Dead animal questions

How much does dead animal removal cost in Macon?

$200 – $600, more if drywall has to be opened, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).

Is there a wrong time of year to deal with dead animals?

Follows whatever got in earlier, so it peaks a few weeks after each denning season and during the first hot spell.
